About the role
The Prototype Laboratory in the School of Physics and Astronomy is used by both research staff and students to undertake research and build space instrumentation, specifically focused on camera systems. This role will involve the technical support of the development and adaptation a Raman spectrometer instrument as part of the UKSA bilaterally funded project . You will provide practical support to staff and industry partners working within the Prototype Laboratory, using the specialist laboratory facilities, such as prototype Raman spectrometers.

You will be responsible for supporting the evaluation of the system’s technical performance, supporting the design of the system electronics and mechanical structure, whilst supporting the development of the code to run various parts of the system. This will involve:
  • Performing technical activities (such as soldering, electronics problem solving, etc.) during the proto-typing stage.
  • Supporting the design and development of software (including operation of the camera, and design of the camera CAD).
  • Ensuring the engineering budget requirements are met during the design and evaluation stage of the development.

About you
With a technical background, specifically within the research area of Raman spectroscopy and the development of instrumentation for space missions, you will have experience of working within a laboratory or workshop setting.  Specific training will be provided where necessary, either via shadowing or dedicated training courses. In addition, you will have experience of CAD software programmes and technical experience with the development of camera system electronics.
