The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (KIR) is seeking to recruit an exceptional individual to lead a new research group in tissue biology related to an area of high strategic interest for the Institute. The KIR’s research spans the three thematic areas of immunity and microbiome, inflammation biology, and tissue remodelling and repair, and their application to chronic inflammatory and degenerative disease. Tissue biology, with a focus on how tissue niches develop, are maintained, and undergo repair, as well as how these pathways are co-opted or altered in disease is central to interests across the Institute. Complementing the KIR’s existing strengths, the new Group Leader will lead a significant research group in stem cell / tissue biology with areas of interest including, but not restricted to, cells of the bone, synovium, cartilage, endothelium and epithelium.
The successful candidate will initiate and implement long-term, often interdisciplinary research programmes, developing new avenues of research, concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding, manage substantial research resources and budgets as well as publish high-profile original research articles and communicate research findings at national and international scientific meetings. You will obtain competitive funding for salary and research support from appropriate government, charity and private organisations. Play a key role in the development of strategic funding bids in collaboration with colleagues at the Institute and partner institutions and oversee the management of technical staff and postdoctoral fellows, and provide supervision of DPhil students, including training and mentorship.
You will hold a relevant Ph.D/D.Phil and/or post-graduate medical degree (M.D.) with significant post-qualification research experience, have a record of outstanding accomplishment with an established international publication record that demonstrates international authority in tissue biology and have experience of managing research projects/programmes and staff including training and mentoring. A record of outstanding accomplishment with an established international publication record that demonstrates international authority in tissue biology, the ability to work effectively under pressure and collaboratively and experience of training, mentoring and developing technical staff, graduate students and post-doctoral scientists is essential. Experience of leading research programmes, including setting the strategic direction is desirable.
The post-holder will be based in the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (KIR), Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences, University of Oxford.
This is a full time fixed-term appointment for 5 years (in the first instance).
The closing date for this position is Wednesday 5 January 2022. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. Please also provide details of three referees who can provide letters of recommendation to demonstrate outstanding personal and professional reputation. Referees will be contacted for all shortlisted candidates in advance of the interviews, so please provide names of people who can be contacted at the time of shortlisting and will be available to provide a reference within a two-week window.
