Junior Database Application Programmer

Job Purpose:

To work in the Glasgow Oncology Clinical Trials Unit within the IT team, and with users from various disciplines across the unit, to learn, develop, enhance, and support database-based IT systems and services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.        To gain a familiarity with the structure and procedures of the CTU, the IT systems that are in use within the CTU, the allocated studies, and the appropriate clinical trial regulations e.g. EU Clinical Trial Directive, Good Clinical Practice, that all lead to successful clinical trials.

2.        Actively work towards prioritised tasks set by the manager. Responsibilities will include contributing to the creation of the electronic data capture (EDC) suite for clinical trials using the unit’s specialized trials database ensuring compliance with the relevant regulations.

3.        Learn to manage and maintain study databases using a combination of API calls, batch files, scripting, and SQL tools.

4.        To review specification requirements for each allocated new trial to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

5.        To collaborate with stakeholders in the design, development, and maintenance of applications to ensure data is collected efficiently.

6.        To develop and maintain new sections and associated checks in electronic remote data capture software for studies specified in the database management plans so that the data can be managed to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

7.        To create user guides for newly created studies to ensure all CTU staff work efficiently.

8.        To provide CTU staff with assistance and support to ensure CTU staff can use relevant software effectively.

9.        To provide solutions and rectify faults for CTU user ad-hoc I.T. requests.

10.   To suggest and implement changes to improve/enhance/develop existing systems and documentation in consultation with the lead programmer and/or Head of IT.

11.   Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.

12.   Duties of the post outlined are not exhaustive and the post-holder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such duties as may be reasonably expected by management. The duties of the post will be subject to review in line with changing technical and other requirements, both internal and external.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, or experience of personal development in a similar role.

An up-to-date knowledge of the MS Office suite of programs, e-mail, and web browsers.

Desirable:

B1 A degree or equivalent qualification in specified/related subject areas.

B2 A working knowledge of API integrations.

B3 Knowledge of programming languages and frameworks (PHP, dotnet, JavaScript)

Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to communicate effectively with IT team members and stakeholders.

C2 Understanding of the system-development cycle and linear programming.

C3 Good organisational and time management skills.

C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C5 Use of initiative and judgement to resolve problems or escalate when appropriate.

C6 Ability to use database software tools. (Oracle/MS SQL server)

C7 Ability to prioritise work.

Desirable:

D1 Knowledge of SQL/PL-SQL/T-SQL (or other database platform equivalents)

D2 Ability to apply accepted theories of relational database management systems.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience in a relevant technical role or educational background in a related field.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 5, £25,138 - £29,605 per annum.

This post is full time, and funded until 30 September 2025.
