About the team/job

This new role sits in EMBL-EBI’s Communications team and will support and deliver effective internal communications for EMBL-EBI and, working closely with the EMBL Communications team, pan EMBL projects.
This role will require working at both a strategic and delivery level in a context of complexity and organisational change.

In this role will work closely with those responsible for internal communications at EMBL’s sites to ensure colleagues are able to effectively engage with and understand organisational change.

You will lead internal communications activities at EMBL-EBI, helping colleagues to understand our strategic direction, impact and missions. A key element of this role will be ensuring all colleagues have the information they need in order to stay safe on, and make the most of the opportunities on campus.
This will be achieved through developing and delivering internal comms and engagement plans, outputs, and tools.

Your role

In this role you will:

  • Lead on internal communications for EMBL-EBI and support organisational change projects across EMBL.  
  • Develop, maintain, and constantly improve a range of internal communications channels such as EMBL-EBI’s intranet, Town Hall meetings, newsletters and staff induction materials to effectively target all EMBL-EBI staff and fellows, taking into account different working patterns and personnel categories.
  • Plan, write and promote content for internal communication channels, ensuring internal and external messages and communications are aligned. 
  • Support senior leaders in crafting communications and identify, commission and promote quality content across internal communications platforms. 
  • Ensure all internal communications content is engaging and has a consistent tone of voice.
  • Work closely with all teams across EMBL-EBI to develop best practice for internal communications that increase staff engagement and sharing of information.
  • Plan and organise regular events which encourage two-way dialogue between management and employees, and enable knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Build insight into the culture, views and expectations of staff and fellows to inform our communications approach, including anticipating questions and supporting a two-way dialogue with colleagues.
  • Work closely with operational teams including HR, teams responsible for change projects, IT, finance and others to support effective communications around change projects across EMBL.
  • Set internal communications objectives, implement effective evaluation systems, and ensure that insights from evaluation are used to continuously improve strategies, plans and activities.
  • Manage the internal communication response to crisis situations which affect organisational perception and reputation.
  • Keep abreast of emerging best practice in internal communications, using insights to constantly improve communications strategies and plans.
  • Work effectively with the EMBL-EBI and EMBL communications teams, supporting cross team projects as needed.

You have

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant professional experience (with relevant professional qualification)
  • Previous experience of internal communications, preferably gained in a complex, multi-site organisation undergoing change
  • Experience of working closely with HR and senior colleagues, and strong experience of building networks and relationships to deliver results
  • IT skills including use of content management systems, word processing, social media, image editing
  • Good judgement and ability to interpret information
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills - able to influence and handle sensitive situations and confidential information

You might also have

  • Ability to review online analytics and collect user research, design surveys and interpret results to draw practical insights from the data.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, discovery science or experience of communications or employee engagement activities in an academic environment.

    Contract duration: This position is a 3 year contract, renewable to a maximum of 9 years.
