Flexible working patterns will be considered.

It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where the successful candidate can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs.

Digital Services are responsible for the digital information, systems and technologies used by staff and students across The Open University.  Covering all aspects of digital technology at the OU, from sourcing and maintaining systems, through to providing frontline IT support for staff and students.

The role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Interaction & UX Designer who will be based within Digital Services.

The initial focus of this Interaction Design and UX role will be to support the Student Services Portfolio whose ambition is to ensure our services and products are designed around users (whether student or colleague) ensuring the best possible outcomes. We are looking to champion new ways to deliver value to users, making the Open University a place where students choose to start and continue their studies, with a focus on making our services easier to use and supporting student success.

We are looking for designers who are excited by using data and user insights to understand the needs of users, and who love collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams to design, iterate and deliver user-centred services.

Skills and experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Know how the internet works, and be able to design for the internet
  • Have experience in designing simple, inclusive, accessible and responsive service interactions based on user needs.
  • Have good graphic design skills, with an understanding of how to use layout, spacing, colour, type and iconography to ensure that content is legible and readable and that users see and understand interactions.
  • Be able to sketch and prototype at different fidelities, for example on paper, and for example in Figma, Adobe XD or HTML.
  • Have good communication skills, and be able to explain ideas in a way that other people understand, both in words and visually through things like storyboards
