Field and Data Technician

The Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery seeks to appoint a part-time (20%) Field and Data Technician to contribute to the monitoring underpinning the ecological work taking place around Oxfordshire. The work is aimed at understanding the impact of nature recovery (passive and active restoration) on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning using a grazing intensity gradient. Invertebrate, microclimate, ground flora, and bioacoustics monitoring are taking place on developed sites around Oxfordshire. The post holder will be responsible for accurately collecting and processing field data as well as taking care of field equipment and lab space.

You will be expected to conduct seasonal invertebrate sampling (pitfall traps, vane traps, soil macrofauna and mesofauna) and download microclimate data from installed data loggers. You will be required to conduct bioacoustics measurements and ad hoc sampling if needed to support project objectives. You will have the ability to input and clean data that have been gathered in the field ready for analysis and be responsible for finding solutions and troubleshoot potential issues with the equipment. You will be confident at processing data and record results in a clear and organised fashion, spotting discrepancies and proposing refinements where necessary. You will promote good data management practices within the project.

The successful candidate will hold a first degree, together with relevant experience and the ability to conduct physically demanding fieldwork. You will communicate and work effectively with a range of people including departmental staff, and research group members. You will have good problem-solving skills and ability to find solutions in challenging working conditions. You will have excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to pay close attention to detail with the ability to organise samples and record results in a clear and organised fashion. You will have experience of working with a range of different types of datasets.
