This is a full-time permanent post is available for a highly motivated cytometry specialist to work with a vibrant and diverse community of researchers using cutting-edge cytometry-based technologies that are primarily focused on microbiology research.

The Post

The Van Houte lab (University of Exeter, Penryn Campus) together with The Exeter Centre for Cytomics (EXCC) at the University of Exeter’s Streatham campus are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated expert in the rapidly developing field of flow cytometry for microbiological purposes. This full-time post based on the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus is available immediately for a passionate cytometry specialist to join a vibrant and diverse community of researchers using cutting-edge cytometry-based technologies that are primarily focused on microbiology research.

EXCC has been established with the aim of becoming a centre of excellence providing cutting-edge innovative cytomics technologies including imaging flow cytometers (Imagestream), BSLII cell sorters (Bigfoot, FACSAria Fusion, Influx), spectral analyser (Aurora), acoustic flow cytometer (Attune NxT), advanced multiplexing technology (FlexMap3D), and high-performance data analysis structure. This portfolio will be expanded by further state-of-the-art Spectral and OMICS technologies (e.g. spatial proteomics and transcriptomics).

The Van Houte lab at the Penryn campus studies interactions between bacteria and mobile genetic elements, and uses flow cytometry methods to understand genetic barriers in bacteria to parasite infections, including bacteriophages and conjugative plasmids.

You will be joining the EXCC team as an expert in cytometry and strengthening our team in the emerging field of microbiological cytometry. The post holder will contribute to the day-to-day management of the Penryn-based facility (which includes an Aurora spectral analyser and a FACSAria fusion BSLII cell sorter), and will be expected to contribute to the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of the facility, its processes, and procedures, and to support the research needs of a range of disciplines accessing the facility, including microbiology, bioinformatics, data science, and immunology. You will be expected to analyse complex data sets with existing publicly available and commercial software solutions (e.g. R/Bioconductor, Python, MatLab, GitHub, FlowJo, FCS Express, Cluster analysis tools, ImageJ, Cell Profiler) and to develop novel tools using statistics, mathematics and machine deep learning approaches for the visualization of high dimensional image and binary data. The post holder will work closely with experts from mathematics, bioinformatics, and computing alongside research scientists of all levels.
