Full-time, fixed term post for 3 years 2024 – 27

Salary £24,248

Newnham College in Cambridge is recruiting a new post of EARLY CAREER LIBRARIAN to join the Library team. This is a fixed term post for 3 years, starting on 1 September 2024 and finishing on 31 August 2027, with no option for extension and is dependent upon the successful candidate having a confirmed place on a Library & Information Studies MA course.

You may still be at the application stage, but a job offer for this position will be conditional on evidence that you have accepted a place on such a course before starting in post.

The aim of this post is to provide systematically planned and supervised experience of work in an academic library while the postholder undertakes a postgraduate qualification in Library & Information studies. The College will fund your part-time studies whilst you work in the library and for the third year you will be expected to work in the library on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate will assist the Librarian and Assistant Librarian in the day-to-day running of the library and will be given training and experience in issue desk and enquiry work, handling book loans and returns, online cataloguing of books, classification, and using the Alma library management system for a variety of tasks. In addition to regular duties, specific project work will be assigned by the Librarian, and opportunities will be given to attend relevant professional meetings.

The salary is paid at point 26 on the University’s single salary spine, currently £24,248 per annum working full-time hours which equate to 37.5 per week. The College will support and fund the Early Career Librarian’s completion of a Library Masters degree (at the cost of UK home fees) over their first two years in post. In years one and two, depending on how you choose to study for your Masters (via distance learning or in person), there is released time during the working week to study. If you decide to leave the course before you have finished, or leave the College within 9 months of completing the course, there is an expectation that you will refund all, or a portion of the course fees paid by the College.

Throughout your three years in this post, the successful candidate, as a College employee, will have full access to all staff benefits, including membership of the USS pension scheme, with a current employer contribution rate of 14.5%. Holiday entitlement is 33 days per year (inclusive of bank holidays), and other benefits include a free meal when on duty, free car parking where available and free use of the College’s gym facilities.

As well as being in receipt of a place on a relevant MA course, the successful applicant will hold a first degree in any discipline, have experience of working in a library, educational or heritage context, be an experienced library user and be able to communicate effectively on all levels.

A job description (including a person specification), application form and equal opportunities form can be found below. Please demonstrate on your application form how you meet the essential requirements of the post found in the person specification.
