We are looking for a finance manager to join the Medical Sciences Divisional office finance team. You will work closely with the head of department, academic staff, research centres and external partners to ensure effective and efficient use of resources, compliance with university policies and procedures, and delivery of strategic objectives.

The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic.

The Finance Division supports the academic, research and administrative community at the University providing sound financial advice and timely information with a range of support services including financial operations, financial reporting, financial support and professional services.

What We Offer

As an employer, we genuinely care about our employees’ wellbeing and this is reflected in the range of benefits that we offer including:

•             An excellent contributory pension scheme

•             38 days annual leave

•             A comprehensive range of childcare services

•             Cycle loan scheme

•             Discounted bus travel and Season Ticket travel loans

•             Membership to a variety of social and sports clubs

About the Role

This post is formally part of the Finance Division but is embedded within the Medical Sciences Division and will report to the Divisional Financial Controller (DFC).  The Medical Sciences Division is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research and teaching and is the largest of the four academic divisions within the University.

You will be part of a team providing a comprehensive wide-ranging financial support service that closely supports the division and its academic departments with budgeting, forecasting and monitoring; management accounting and reporting; financial planning and analysis; and other high-level financial administration tasks. The post holder will need the skill set to act as a critical friend to senior department administrators, including engaging in occasionally challenging conversations around resourcing and financial strategy to help them realise their world-class research and academic ambitions.

In addition to proven financial management experience, the post-holder will need to demonstrate a clear commitment to customer service, have a flexible, ‘can-do’ attitude and be able to understand quickly and respond appropriately to the local needs and context of academic departments.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community.

You will be based in the Medical Sciences Divisional office at the John Radcliffe Hospital but you may be able to agree a pattern of regular remote working with your line manager.

About You

Are you a qualified accountant with excellent communication and technical skills? Do you enjoy working in a large and complex organisation, where you can make a difference and add value? Do you enjoy communicating with both finance and non-finance professions? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for our finance team!

We are looking for a finance professional who can:

•        Establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, from senior management to administrators, and communicate finance matters clearly and persuasively.

•        Demonstrate expertise in budgeting and planning, and ensure that timetables and deadlines are met.

•        Work collaboratively with other team members and contribute to problem-solving and solution generation.

•        High levels of personal effectiveness and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances with a flexible and positive attitude.

Application Process

You will be required to upload a supporting statement, CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 25 March 2024.

We will be conducting interviews throughout this process and hold the right to close applications early should we find a suitable candidate
