Founded in 1899, The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. We are a network of specialist centres, units and partners around the world, working together to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and the translation of knowledge into policy and practice. We do this at a local, national and global scale. Our vision is to help create a more healthy, sustainable and equitable world for everyone because we believe our shared future depends on our shared health.

LSHTM received a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of its work on COVID-19 and pandemic preparedness in 2020-21. We were in a unique position to act when COVID-19 hit the world. Emerging infections and preparing for epidemics is a strategic priority for research and education, and specialist teams were set up to support responses to crises as they were unfolding. Our free online course ‘COVID-19: Tackling the Novel Coronavirus’ had more than 230,000 learners from 189 countries in early 2020.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework we were ranked first for impact and joint 10th overall of all universities in the UK. Our income comes from a range of sources including philanthropy, which has grown in significance over the last seven years. Since 2019 our Development and Alumni Relations Office has raised over £30m in philanthropic income. We now seek to appoint a new Director of Development & Alumni Relations to provide strategic leadership in philanthropy, alumni and corporate engagement to support LSHTM’s vision, values and strategy and the delivery of its mission to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide.

This is an exceptional opportunity to drive and implement a strategy for philanthropy at the heart of a special community dedicated to improving health worldwide. Applicants will be passionate about LSHTM’s mission and will bring a successful track record of building effective, long-term, high-value philanthropic relationships together with evident major gift fundraising and leadership experience. Applicants will have experience in developing and implementing an integrated and diverse fundraising strategy, including the setting of strategic objectives and targets. Applicants will have demonstrable experience within key international fundraising markets. With an inclusive approach to leadership, the successful candidate will have a proven commitment to, and experience promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The Director of Development & Alumni Relations post is full-time, permanent and will have an opportunity to benefit from our hybrid working framework.
