Determining the cellular and molecular basis of seizure phenotypes in models of a human neurodegenerative disease

The aim of this PhD is to better understand a rare neurological disease termed neurodevelopmental disorder with microcephaly, hypotonia and variable brain anomalies (NMIHBA). You will use a combination of Drosophila and zebrafish models of NMIHBA to determine the basis of seizures observed in NMIHBA patients as well as our newly developed Drosophila and zebrafish models of NMIHBA.

You will use genetic approaches to determine which cell types are involved in the seizure phenotype. You will then use fluorescence microscopy to investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying the phenotype.

You will have access to excellent zebrafish facilities and support staff in the Bateson Centre, and the newly established fly lab at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Research. You will be working with 2 supervisors, with expertise in zebrafish and Drosophila neuroscience research. You will receive training in both Drosophila and zebrafish husbandry and genetics, including training for the use of animals in research. You will have the opportunity to attend and present your findings at international scientific symposia.
