About Us

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FMD) is one of the three faculties within Queen Mary University of London and plays a key role in its success.  The FMD offers international excellence in research and teaching and supports clinical services for a population of unrivalled ethnic diversity in East London and the wider Thames Gateway. At the forefront of medical research and education, with research themes in cancer, cardiovascular medicine, genomics, inflammation, trauma and population health, the Medicine ranked 57th and Dentistry 16th in the 2023 QS World University rankings and 68th in THE for Clinical and Health courses.

Working with six NHS Trust partners in East London, the faculty is central to delivering impact on health-related challenges across 2.5 million people from 97 nations that can act as a research and educational window on the world. We are also one of only seven faculties in the UK to hold an Athena Swan Gold award, recognising our significant progression and achievements in gender equality in medicine.

To support our future ambitions and strategy, we wish to appoint a new Dean for Education and Student Affairs to oversee undergraduate and postgraduate education in Medicine and Dentistry and lead our student affairs.

About The Role

Reporting directly to the VP for Health and working in close partnership with the Dean for Digital Education, Institute Directors, the Directors of Education and Education Managers across our six Institutes, you will design, lead, and deliver a vibrant education strategy, and develop and oversee leading edge and innovative taught programmes to 5700 students in medical, dental and scientific education at undergraduate and postgraduate level with the key aims of maximising student academic outcomes, improving student satisfaction and employability and promoting leading edge academic standards, and quality of teaching and assessment in an efficient manner.

Based across all our campuses in London, this role will afford you the chance to further strengthen the faculty’s national and international position as a leading faculty in the field of Medicine and Dentistry and related subjects and to also represent the faculty on key university-wide initiatives such as the Teaching Excellence Framework.

About You

Your previous experience within medicine and dentistry in leading the development of teaching, curriculum design and assessment will make you stand out amongst your peers. You will bring with you a significant track record in leading educational strategy, underpinned by ensuring our students are given the very best learning experiences, support and opportunities to equip them to become future leaders, practitioners and/or academics.

You will have an ability to foster a culture of educational innovation, curricula refresh and maximise the use of the latest technologies and educational approaches and will see this as an ideal opportunity to transfer your progressive vision, outcomes focus and renowned publications to a faculty and university with ambitious plans to be the most inclusive university, anywhere.

You will inspire others through your actions, engage colleagues through your variety of communication styles and transform our opportunities through collaboration regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The Dean role is initially offered on a five-year basis alongside a substantive post of Professor and Honorary Consultant.
