Data Centre Technician

Job Purpose

A key member of the Infrastructure team responsible for providing and Supporting the University’s IT Infrastructure, which is essential for the University’s research, teaching and professional services. Your primary responsibility is supporting and maintaining the University’s central Data Centre & Server room infrastructure across a variety of locations on and off the main University Campus, including resource at a co-location facility located in Chapelhall, as directed by the Data Centre Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Take a prominent role in managing, maintaining IT hardware for the University, utilising specialist expertise and knowledge to enhance IT practices.

2. Proactively monitor the data centre hardware and engage with hardware suppliers to undertake any necessary maintenance.

3. Responsible for monitoring power usage, UPS, generators and air-conditioning as directed by the Data Centre Manager.

4. Monitoring the University central Disaster Recovery service (Backups).

5. Coordinate with tenants to receive and commission new IT equipment.

6. Arranging for disposal of obsolete equipment in accordance with current WEEE regulations.

7. Maintain an asset register for the data centre IT hardware.

8. Work independently to resolve issues where possible, seeking advice and support from more experienced colleagues when required.

9. Supervise external contractors and maintenance engineers who require physical access to the data centres.

10. In the future we expect this job will include ops management & monitoring on cloud platforms.

11. Any other appropriate duties as directed by the Data Centre Manager or other Infrastructure Team Manager.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles.

A2: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 in Computing Science or a related discipline, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal Training) OR experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A3 knowledge of IT data centre server and networking hardware, it’s installation and physical management.

A4 knowledge of IT data centre cabling technologies.

A5 knowledge of IT data centre power considerations.

Desirable:

B1 Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.

B2 Knowledge of server lights-out-management and associated technologies.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Excellent IT skills in hardware support, installation and network cabling.

C2 Good interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral.

C3 High standard of people, time and problem-solving skills.

C4 Well-organised and systematic in the approach to problems and record-keeping.

C5 Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Desirable:

D1 Knowledge of networking fundamentals.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Significant experience in an IT Related discipline sufficient to undertake and perform the main duties and responsibilities of the role.

E2 Experience of monitoring & supporting IT Backup & restore.

E3 Experience of working in a data centre or server room environment.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of managing infrastructure in a remote Co-location facility.

F2 Experience of managing data centre infrastructure.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £32,332 - £36,024 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
