The School of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences have an exciting opportunity for a two-year fixed term Fellowship. The post is supported through the David Cargill Trust, you will join the David Cargill Chair and academic team in the New Lister Building Campus. Clinical activities will be in those disciplines aligned with the Cargill Trust interests, namely older adult and stroke care and will be based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Research activities will be in the broad areas of interest of the research group, namely brain health, frailty and/or stroke.

The Fellowship will provide an exceptional opportunity for further academic training that enables the successful candidate to compete for independent funding, typically in the form of an externally funded Fellowship. Appointment to this CCT Fellowship will end at the time of the candidate taking up their independently funded post. The anticipation is that the support will be for up to two years, but this may be extended if required.

You will hold MRCP (UK)/or equivalent and will have completed Higher Specialist Training in a medical specialty within 6 months prior to appointment. The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate entry level of Clinical Consultant and will hold a position of Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary NHS Consultant.

The primary focus of the post is research, but NHS work as a consultant is a requirement. The minimum NHS commitment will be 20% and the maximum NHS commitment will be 50% of full time working, and the expectation is that the NHS will support this activity.  Research will be undertaken in the world class academic environment of the University of Glasgow with excellent opportunities in Clinical Trials, Stratified Medicine, Epidemiology, Systems Biology & Vascular Biology.

Job Purpose

The academic aim of the Post CCT Lectureship is to foster and mentor the development of an independent academic career. The primary focus of the post is research, but NHS work as a consultant is a requirement. The minimum NHS commitment will be 20% and the maximum NHS commitment will be 50% of full time working, and the expectation is that the NHS will support this activity.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Research

The appointee will have an established interest in research with a record of achievement in an area relevant to existing interests in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. The appointee will be expected to:

-  Develop a programme of research in collaboration with senior investigators in one of the Schools of the College, in a subject area in basic, translational or clinical science related to ageing, dementia or stroke.

-  Create a portfolio of research and other activity to support a competitive application for an external Fellowship award.

-  Contribute to research projects and supervision within the academic team.

-  Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators as appropriate; and to contribute to and submit grant applications and publications in high quality journals.

2.Teaching

While the anticipation is that protected academic time will be predominantly used for research, it is expected that the Fellow will contribute to delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. These might include;

-  Teaching of clinical skills and other vocational training activities, including seminars and tutorials.

-  Fellows may also contribute to postgraduate taught courses within the College, this would typically be through delivering lectures and supporting student research projects.

-  Evidence of PHD or MSc supervision.

3.Administrative Duties

The Fellow will contribute to administrative duties related to research and teaching as directed by their supervisor.

4.Clinical Duties

Clinical duties will be arranged by in collaboration with the relevant NHS Board. It is anticipated that the candidate will have between 2 - 5 programmed activities, with a mix of direct clinical activity and supporting professional activities as agreed between NHS and University. Joint academic/clinical job planning and appraisal will support the successful candidate to ensure an optimal transition into their senior clinical academic career. Academic support will be available including annual research and training assessments to ensure that there is adequate balance between academic and clinical training.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential: 

A1. MB ChB or equivalent and full registration with General Medical Council (for non UK candidates, GMC registration would be required before taking up the post).

A2. MRCP (UK) or equivalent.

A3. Completed higher specialist training in a relevant clinical specialty.

A4. Awarded higher degree (MD or PhD).

Desirable: 

B1. BMedSci, BSc or equivalent intercalated degree in medicine or related subject, or other degree.

Experience/Training

Essential:

C1. Clinical experience in medicine to function at consultant level.

C2. A competitive portfolio of clinical research experience.

C3. An interest in a sub-speciality related to the research interests of the academic team and aligned with the funding requirements of David Cargill Trust, as described above.

C4. Significant experience in presentation of research at local, national and international conferences.

C5. Significant experience in publication of research in peer reviewed scientific journals, books and other media.

C6. A well-advanced outline of a research programme that has the potential to attract external funding and will benefit from this Post CCT Fellowship e.g. to produce further pilot data, publish pilot results or similar.

C7.  Evidence of participation in national and international professional societies relevant to the research interest.

D1. An interest in teaching and learning in medicine.

Terms and Conditions

An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £96,963 – £128,841 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.

This post is full time and has funding for 2 years.
