We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Senior Lecturer to make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. In addition, you will actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding, and outreach. The successful candidate will contribute to clinical care and leading service developments commensurate with clinical speciality under an NHS honorary contract at consultant level. 

The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health is one of eight Schools within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. The School is internationally leading in the areas of research, education (at undergraduate and postgraduate level) and has a wide ranging internationalisation, engagement and enterprise portfolio. Research in the School focusses on the areas of cardiac diseases (including but not limited to ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and cardio-oncology), metabolic diseases (including but not limited to diabetes and obesity) and vascular diseases (including but not limited to hypertension, cerebrovascular disease and kidney disease), supported by a cross-cutting research theme in cardiovascular data science. The School is proud of its translational research strategy from fundamental and discovery science to experimental medicine, epidemiology, clinical trials and implementation research.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD or MD] or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.

Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. To contribute to clinical care and leading service developments commensurate with clinical speciality under an NHS honorary contract at consultant level.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Academic

1. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy. This work will be primarily in areas linked to heart failure and clinical trials.

2. To contribute to and further develop the clinical trial capabilities in the School/College in the areas of heart failure, related conditions, and comorbidities. This work will include the setting up, running of, and analysis of Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials and will utilise the school’s expertise in cardiovascular imaging (e.g. cardiac MRI) and biomarker-based research.

3. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.

4. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including knowledge exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.

5. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams \[beyond subject/School level\].

6. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.

7. Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online

provision.

8. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.

9. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.

10. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.

11. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.

12. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

14. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Clinical

15. To contribute to clinical service provision at the level of Honorary Consultant in Cardiology with special interest in heart failure, within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

16. Ensure compliance with annual appraisal and GMC/NHS revalidation. Participation in NHS/University Joint Appraisal Scheme is a condition of employment for all medical academic staff. In accordance with the Follett Report recommendations participation in a joint appraisal arrangement will be agreed locally.

Qualifications

Essential

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD or MD] or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.

A2. Requisite clinical qualification and certification for clinical practice at Consultant level in Cardiology the UK.

A3. Relevant and enduring membership of General Medical Council.

A4. Recognised expertise in heart failure and evidence that can develop new knowledge and understanding in this field.

A5. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

A6. Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

A7. Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions.

Desirable

B1. Membership of a relevant professional body, if applicable.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

C1. Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.

C2. High quality clinical skills in the management of patients living with heart failure.

C3. Experience in planning and conducting randomised controlled trials in heart failure, related conditions, and comorbidities, including regulatory interactions.

C4. A strong body of work in randomised clinical trials including investigation of disease mechanisms and biomarker and imaging-based analyses.

C5. An ability to conduct, supervise and publish analyses of data from randomised trials, including patient-level meta-analysis of trial data.

C6. Experience and understanding of the design of screening and diagnostic accuracy studies with a focus on the use of circulating biomarkers.

C7. Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding of cardiovascular conditions.

C8. Ability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.

C9. Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions and with industry.

C10. Ability to demonstrate independent thought in order to generate original research and secure research income.

C11. Substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF.

Desirable

D1. Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism.

D2. Internationally recognised excellence and reputation in subject area and scholarship of teaching in the discipline.

D3. Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods.

D4. Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team.

Terms and Conditions

An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £96,963 – £128,841 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
