Job description

Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow post working between the Comprehensive Cancer Centre and Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions at King’s College London, Guys Campus. This post has been established to support research within the Reis Ferreira group and will be available from April 2024 for a period of 48 months. 

The Reis Ferreira group focuses on understanding how the microbiota contributes to cancer treatment outcomes. Within this theme, we have an interest in understanding how gut bacteria modulate the outcomes of radiotherapy for prostate cancer. The post is adequate for a candidate with an interest in oncology and is particularly suitable for candidate with a background in clinical oncology.

The applicant will be working towards a PhD and research whether the intestinal microbiota predicts side-effects of prostate cancer radiotherapy. This work will involve interaction with an international and multidisciplinary team. They will develop skills in metagenomics, bacterial community profiling, metabolomics, clinical data interpretation and machine learning. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to sample collection and processing within the scope of their studies and attend relevant clinics at Guys. This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.


Key responsibilities
  • The post holder will be required to undertake a leading role in a major research project. The research project will entail project design, ethical approvals, experimental work in addition to data analysis and reporting the results in peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences.  
  • The post holder will also attend weekly research clinics and will be encouraged to maintain clinical activity and training, including radiotherapy planning. However, clinical work will be made commensurate to research activities to ensure feasibility of the project within the timescale above. 
  • The post-holder will also contribute to other research initiatives in the lab and oversee sample processing and data extraction. 
  • The post-holder will interact with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers and data scientists 
  • This post will involve a major international collaboration and may require international travel and small periods of international collaborative work. However, the vast majority of the work will be undertaken in London.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) 
  • Eligible for full GMC registration; 
  • Working towards a specialism in oncology and/or post-CCT in clinical or medical oncology; 
  • Highly motivated towards research and development; 
  • Experience in clinical audit and/or clinical research 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Good clinical practice 
  • Evidence of leadership skills 
  • An interest in translational medical science
