Job summary

The Chain Florey Clinical Research Fellowship Scheme presents clinical trainees with a unique opportunity to study basic science supported by two world-renowned academic institutions, Imperial College and the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS). The scheme has a variety of PhD projects on offer which focus specifically on experimental science rather than on clinical research.

Chain Florey Clinical Research Fellowship provides an ideal base for those wishing to pursue a career in clinical academia. You should possess prior laboratory experience and will need to demonstrate the skill base and motivation for a basic science PhD; the successful candidate is expected to complete their PhD within the duration of the appointment.

The LMS is a world-class Research Institute closely linked to the Faculty of Medicine of Imperial College London, at its Hammersmith Hospital Campus. The Institute has a history of welcoming clinicians into its labs to carry out basic and applied research as part of their training.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To take initiatives in planning and conducting research and ensuring the timely execution of such research

  • To identify and develop suitable techniques and apparatus for the collection and analysis of data

  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times including maintaining accurate and complete records of all findings


Essential requirements

  • Practicing medic in training in the UK

  • A medical degree

  • GMC Registration

  • Completed Foundation Year Training

  • Experience of conducting scientific research


Further information

This is a full time and fixed term post for 3 years. You will be based at the Hammersmith Campus (East Acton).

A PhD is expected to be completed within this period, after which the postholder will return to their postgraduate clinical training.

As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, at the appropriate level, will be required for the successful candidate.

Please note: If you’re currently in an approved NHS training programme, you will be appointed on the doctors in training salary scale (£29,384 - £58,398 per annum, plus £2,162 London Allowance per annum).
