We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Microbiologist, at Assistant or Associate Professor level, to join the senior staff of the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network (CHAMPS) in Ethiopia.
The post-holder will work full-time at the CHAMPS site in Haramaya, Eastern Ethiopia and will be responsible to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the CHAMPS study, Prof Anthony Scott. The post-holder will work closely with other project specific staff (Study Co-PIs, Pathologist, Project Managers, Medical and Clinical Officers, Nurses, Demographic Surveillance staff, Social Science staff) to develop capacity to participate and maintain the site in the CHAMPS network. The core of the project is to develop laboratory, epidemiological and clinical surveillance for detection of infectious diseases in children who have died (through minimally invasive tissue sampling) and those with life-threatening illnesses.
The Clinical Microbiologist will be responsible for developing capacity for conventional and molecular microbiological assays (Taqmann Array Cards) using standardised operating procedures defined in the CHAMPS protocols. They will assist the PI and Co-PIs with the running of the core study and surveillance. In addition, the post holder will be expected to develop an individual research base in a related area which may not limited to vaccines against bacterial infections, genomic analysis of bacterial pathogenesis, or similar - depending on the existing skills and interests of the successful applicant.
The successful candidate must be medically qualified with postgraduate training in clinical microbiology (and eligible for medical registration in Ethiopia), have a PhD in microbiology or related field, a licence to practise medicine which is acceptable in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, clinical experience in the relevant field as specialty registrar or consultant, experience conducting laboratory research and implementing this with a team.
To be considered for the Associate Professor role, the post-holder must have proven ability to manage a team and the capacity to develop and manage a medium sized lab; a proven record in winning research grant applications commensurate with research experience; proven ability to take responsibility for the delivery of research grant objectives; proven ability to teach at a postgraduate level and provide training to research teams. Experience of working in a low or lower-middle income country and developing laboratory capacity and evidence of post-graduate medical training appropriate to the level of appointment would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.
The post holder will be employed as an academic member of staff of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and will be based full-time at Haramaya University, Ethiopia. The post is available from 1 April 2017 and is funded until 30 June 2018. Further funding may be available after this date. The appointment will be made on the National Clinical Academic salary scale below the level of consultant: £33,597 to £56,495 per annum for the Assistant Professor post and £52,462 to £60,527 for the Associate Professor post, depending on qualifications and experience.
Additional overseas allowances and benefits will be provided as appropriate. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
