The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Career Launch Postdoctoral Research Fellow in XR technologies to contribute to the delivery and reporting of Edinburgh College of Art activities to drive innovation in emerging technologies across screen and performance. The post holder will have excellent creative, technical and communication skills and will take a leading role in supporting, reporting and completion of practice-based research within a multidisciplinary project related to CoSTAR Realtime Lab and with world-leading industry partners in the gaming, animation and film sectors.

The Convergent Screen Technologies and Performance in Realtime (CoSTAR) programme is a national network funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). CoSTAR will support the design, development and creation of state-of-the-art facilities, resources and expertise to underpin the long-term competitiveness of the UK’s screen and performance sectors. This post will provide academic and industry support for delivery of Edinburgh College of Art activities driving innovation in emerging technologies across screen and performance, related to CoSTAR.

This post is funded via the University of Edinburgh Career Development Scheme, as a Career Launch Postdoctoral Fellowship which aims to bridge the challenging transition from PhD to externally funded postdoctoral fellowships or equivalent. They are aimed at promising applicants who have completed a PhD but are not yet in an open-ended research role or have not yet been awarded a major postdoctoral fellowship.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A PhD in a subject relevant to the scope of the CoSTAR Realtime Lab such as expertise in film, animation, immersive, or gaming, including the use and application of convergent/ XR technologies.
  • Experience of using software and hardware to develop practice-led creative immersive environments using Unreal Engine. 
  • Excellent technical, data management, creative, and production skills across a range of XR based approaches. 
  • Demonstrate potential for generation of outstanding publications.                   
  • Experience of industry collaboration and engagement. 
  • Good personal organisational skills and the ability to work on own initiative.
