Job description

The Business Architect will work within the Business Architecture team, part of Enterprise Architecture, and report to the Head of Business Architecture.

The post holder will collaborate, assist and coach other members within the team and be responsible for a full range of business architecture activities, which will help enable the operational effectiveness and adaptability as an agent for innovation and change, to help King’s exploit digital technology to secure advantage.

They will work in a team to proactively and holistically scope and support the delivery of King’s vision and strategies (Currently Vision 2029 and Strategy 2026; Student Success, a thriving King’s community, Sustainable Research and Innovation and the sharing of Knowledge with the world). This will involve building consensus amongst stakeholders with different concerns towards a desirable, feasible and viable target state and outcomes.

The post holder will be skilled in communication, facilitation, and relationship building, with a flair for tailored visualisations that simplify complex information to specialist and non-specialist audiences. They will take a practical approach to supporting colleagues across the King’s community which includes a 10,000 strong workforce, 34,000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, short course and lifelong learners, and an extensive research partner and funder ecosystem around the world within a complex organisation with annual revenue exceeding £1 billion.

The role will involve helping stakeholders realise future-state business capabilities by designing and testing operating models, architectural views, organisation options, business models, services, products, processes and roadmaps that are aligned with King’s strategic goals.

The post holder should also be capable of staying up to date and practically applying existing, new and emerging technologies and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, experimental environment within Higher Education.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

Key responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development and delivery of a full range of business architecture services and products. 
  • Facilitate workshops and meetings with stakeholders to capture, define and maintain business architecture artifacts and data. 
  • Develop maps, models, and views to address organisational and stakeholder needs and concerns. 
  • Support the creation and ensure the maintenance of business architecture design documentation. 
  • Assist the definition and coordinate delivery of targeted outcomes, provide advice, guidance, and recommendations.
  • Lead the use of business architecture tools and techniques to support and guide decisions.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend improvements and provide consultative analysis.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships cross functionally.
  • Promote the identity and services of business architecture, demonstrating value, using a range of communications channels.
  • Capture customer feedback and developing a backlog of continuous improvements. 
  • Assist the development of the business architecture team’s capabilities, ways of working, reporting, and integration with the Enterprise Architecture team.
  • Assist, coach and influence members of the team, the wider network of Architects and colleagues requesting business architecture services, embedding good practice across King’s. 
  • Encourage and assist enterprise ideation and innovation. 
  • Support internal team reporting to ensure metrics are up to date and correctly capture team efforts.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 
  • Understanding of business architecture frameworks, principles and processes and basic graphical modelling approaches, tools and model repositories 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and diplomacy 
  • Experienced in people management, communication, negotiation and presentation skills 
  • Good grasp of the entities involved in an Enterprise Architecture 
  • Aware of information management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, operations, and EA and ITIL frameworks 

Essential criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in business, management, IT, computer science, system analysis or a related field of study, or equivalent commercial experience 
  • ITIL Service Management Foundation certification  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and diplomacy, with the ability to deal effectively with people cross-functionally at all levels 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, using a range of forms to present complex ideas clearly and accessibly, and ability to learn and speak the language of a stakeholder 
  • Experience in line/matrix/capability management and/or coaching or influencing colleagues within the team or across the organisation  
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Positive, proactive and can-do attitude with an ability to work as a team and independently  
  • Proven ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, demonstrating confidence and reliability  
  • Experience in business capabilities, business models, services, products and processes  
  • Ability to balance the long-term implications of short-term decisions and actions 
  • Able to form strong relationships with immediate colleagues, customers and 3rd parties using our Principles in Action - Connecting, Supporting, Challenging and Including at all times. 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Professional experience working for an IT function, preferably within Enterprise or Business Architecture and/or within Higher Education 
  • Current technical/business/architectural certifications 
  • Experience in service management and development tools and frameworks 
  • Developing new and innovative ways of working, introducing efficiencies/automation and a commitment to continuous improvement
