BSL/English Interpreter

Purpose of Role: The post holder will interpret between English and British Sign Language (BSL) for staff and students within Heriot-Watt University, and externally at lectures, research meetings and conferences; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population; maintain cooperative working relationships; and carry out some minor administrative duties.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities:

               BSL/English Interpreting

  • Preparation for interpreting assignments.
  • Interpret between spoken English and British Sign Language (BSL) for members of staff and students
  • Translation between written English and BSL for members of staff and students
  • Actively invite feedback and adapt to the needs of individuals requiring interpreter support

Other

  • Administrative duties including maintaining own work records to assist the interpreter coordinator with booking of interpreters and Access to Work claims
  • Administrative support for the BSL student community and interpreting placement activities; mentoring undergraduate interpreting students.
  • Participate in University activities where appropriate and in consultation with line managers.
  • Actively follow HWU policies including Equal Opportunities, Race Equality policies and GDPR.
  • The post holder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations
  • The post may involve travel to accompany Deaf staff or students to external events.

Education, Qualifications & Experience:

These are the criteria on which the short-listing and recruitment selection will be made

Essential

  • Qualified BSL/English interpreter (NRCPD registered MRSLI)
  • Member of SCOSLI, ASLI or VLP
  • Minimum of two years interpreting experience post-qualification
  • Excellent fluency in a signed language
  • Excellent English skills
  • Experience of working within a similar environment as outlined above
  • Confident in the use of relevant IT packages and familiar with Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrable excellent customer service
  • Demonstrable professional and proactive approach
