Jindal School of Languages and Literature (JSLL)is the 11th school of JGU and begins its first academic session in August 2022 with admission of students to the BA (Hons.)English and BA (Hons.) Spanish programmes.

Position Summary:

Jindal School of Languages and Literature (JSLL) of O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) is hiring faculty members for Fall 2024 semester.

JSLL currently has six full time faculty members who contribute to the school’s BA Hons. English programme and teach elective courses open to students of other JGU schools.  Additional permanent faculty (Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor) will be appointed to JSLL to begin in the 2024-2025 academic year (August – June), with specialisation in one or more of the following areas: literature in English (all periods, genres, regions); comparative literature; linguistics and communication studies; creative or expository writing; translation studies.  They will join colleagues who work with languages/literatures other than English.  The primary medium of instruction in JSLL courses is English.

Roles and responsibilities:

Faculty members will be expected to teach undergraduate, (post)graduate and doctoral-level courses, mentor students, and engage in other activities (including student recruitment) on behalf of the school and the university. Faculty shall oversee JSLL internship programmes, foster national and international collaboration in research and learning, and contribute to the advance of their profession at global and local levels.  International collaboration will include ‘global classroom’ (online) teaching involving students of JGU as well as other higher education institutions.  Appointees at the level of Associate Professor or Professor are expected to be professionally visible scholars and/or practitioners, with a record of securing research grants, and with commensurate experience in institutional administration.  Their academic leadership should be evident in journal editorships, engagement with professional associations, and organisation of conferences and academic workshops.  They must have experience in guiding doctoral research as well as mentoring undergraduate students.

All applicants should have completed significant research projects in one or more areas of language and literature studies (and/or translation studies, linguistics, or communications) and their work should have been communicated to an academic/professional community in the form of publications, conference presentations, media reports, or other appropriate mode of professional communication. Applicants will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and must possess communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse body of students and colleagues. Applicants are expected to have an agenda of future research and be able to ‘teach through research’ and train researchers (including undergraduates).  They should have experience in online teaching or working in blended learning environments.  Regardless of their specialization area, applicants are preferred who have high proficiency in at least one language other than English and are prepared to teach about texts and cultural artefacts originating in multiple languages.

Qualifications and professional experience:

  • For appointment as Professor or Associate Professor , an earned doctorate at time of application is required.  The doctoral degree could be in any field relating broadly to English studies, including but not limited to the following: English language/literature studies; comparative literature (with English as one element); creative writing; translation studies (with English as source or target language); linguistics; journalism/communication studies/media studies; film studies; drama studies; performing arts.
  • For appointment as Assistant Professor , a doctorate at time of application is strongly preferred.  Appointment at level of Lecturer is possible for well qualified applicants without doctoral degrees.
  • Candidates with doctorates in education or education studies may be considered, provided the focus of their training and research has been English language learning and pedagogy (English as Other Language, etc.).
  • Undergraduate-level teaching experience in English language/literature/cultural studies is required ; experience in post-graduate teaching and doctoral supervision is preferred for applicants at level of Professor/Associate Professor.
  • Research published in professional peer-reviewed journal and/or as monographs.  (Other forms of professional communication and outreach may be recognized as contributing to the publication requirement.)

In addition to demonstrating sound knowledge of their academic field, successful applicants should demonstrate:

  • ability to effectively communicate and work productively with colleagues (co-teaching of courses, committee work, etc.);
  • ability to effectively engage and teach students with a wide range of skills, motivations, and academic and vocational goals;
  • ability to work in admission outreach activities involving prospective students, teachers, and parents; ability to promote innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
  • ability to participate in curriculum development and effectively assess student learning outcomes;
  • ability to maintain an active research career, resulting in regular output of professional publications.
