In 2019 UCL founded the SPRC to support the study of racism and racialisation and their impacts on science, metaphysics and culture. The SPRC’s remit is to coordinate, deepen and promote UCL’s work on these questions in active engagement and exchange with multi-disciplinary debates. With Professor Paul Gilroy as the Inaugural Director, the SPRC has flourished, despite starting out in pandemic conditions, and is now established as an internationally renowned reference point in the critical study of race. The MA in Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies is currently in its third cohort of students (c. 15-20 p.a.). The SPRC sits within UCL's Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). One of the IAS' key research strands is critical area studies from a post-colonial perspective, so the work of the SPRC takes place in an intellectual environment conducive to exploring questions of race, place and region in a globalised context. As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, UCL also offers some great benefits including: 41 Days holiday (pro-rata); Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension; Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan; On-Site nursery and gym; Employee assistance programme; Discounted medical insurance.

We are now looking to recruit a new Director to build on the outstanding achievements to date and to consolidate the position of the SPRC as a major centre of excellence. The appointee will be working within the fields of critical race studies, race theory, histories/representations of racialised thinking and racism, and/or their social practices, impacts and effects. They will have a proven track record in the critical study of race, manifest through ambitious, world-leading scholarship, influential publications, success in establishing and leading significant research projects and teams as well as experience in applying for and gaining funding in related areas of study. The Director will be responsible for the strategic direction of the SPRC and for ensuring its financial sustainability, through a combination of postgraduate teaching, external research funding and/or philanthropic support. The Director will also lead the day-to-day operation of the Centre, including management of two permanent academic members of staff, an administrator, postdoctoral fellows and visiting fellows. They will oversee and help to deliver the taught Masters programme (Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies). The appointment is a permanent position at grade 9 or 10.

The successful candidate must have a world-leading reputation in the field of the study of race and racism, and the ability to act as an effective representative for the Centre on a global stage. A strong record of scholarly work and international publications of the highest quality on areas such as the history of race as a concept and its imbrication/implication in social institutions and processes, law, education, psychic life, culture and the arts, language, employment, social policy and/or socioeconomic attainment. A demonstrable track record in research leadership and/or winning competitive research funds. More details can be found within the job specification.

The interview will take place on the 17 April 2024. Details of referees will only be requested for shortlisted candidates, and references will only be followed up after a successful interview.
