The School 

Psychology is an ambitious and growing academic unit within the School of Education, Language and Psychology.

Psychology has grown in staff and student numbers at all levels of study in recent years. Consistently excellent teaching and an inclusive ethos provide an exceptional experience for students, as demonstrated by our strong performance in the National Student Survey. Taught programmes in Psychology include a suite of BPS-accredited undergraduate degrees, taught and research Master’s programmes, and an accredited professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.  

Key areas of research strength in Psychology are in cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, and neurodiversity and mental health. We are additionally growing our expertise in clinical and forensic applications of psychology. In REF2021, over 70% of the Psychology research outputs and 100% of impact were rated as world leading or internationally excellent.

The Role 

The role holder will have principal responsibility for leading the Psychology academic team and will hold line management responsibility for academic staff in the area, with support from two Deputy Associate Heads. The successful candidate will represent and champion Psychology as a member of the School Academic Leadership Team, and contribute to the overall strategic development of the School. 

Key Requirements 

The successful candidate will have a clear understanding of the challenges of teaching and doing research in Psychology in higher education. They will have an established research profile, and their track-record of excellence in research will allow them to mentor and support the development of early career researchers. They will also be a creative and capable teacher. Importantly, the successful candidate will be fully committed to providing inclusive educational experiences that improve the lives of our students and the wider communities in which they live. The successful candidate will be a strong team player who inspires colleagues and leads with integrity.
