The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people focusing upon challenges and delivering solutions, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and we are growing. We have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every member of the University.

Our ‘can do’ character and culture empowers our community to achieve our aims and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

The University of Surrey is seeking to appoint a Professorial-level academic to take up the post of Associate Dean Research and Innovation (ADR&I) in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS). This is a permanent academic appointment, with the position of ADR&I offered for an initial period of five years. The ADR&I role leads the Faculty mission to sustainably improve the health and wellbeing of humans and animals, and their environments through new knowledge and its application to the design, development and delivery of responsible innovation and driving impact.

This is a very exciting time to join the University as a refreshed Research and Innovation strategy is being defined. It is also a great time to join the Faculty as part of the leadership team harnessing our One Health, One Medicine multi-disciplinary platform to solving real world issues.

The successful candidate will have both understanding and vision in relation to their own research portfolio, links with professional bodies in the fields of health and medical sciences and be a scientific innovator. To this end, we welcome applications relevant to any academic area of the Faculty, noting that the postholder will move/return to a permanent role within the relevant School at the end of their tenure as ADR&I. Internal applicants are very much encouraged to apply. This post also attracts a pensionable responsibility allowance.

The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

The Faculty is home to almost 5500 students including 800 PGT students and over 400 PGR students, plus a newly recruited cohort of Surrey Future Fellows and Deans Research Fellows who we support and develop as aspiring research leaders of the future, with 650 staff, 500 of which are Academic and Researchers.

The Faculty is one of the University of Surrey’s three faculties and home to talented staff and students across its five Schools of Biosciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Psychology and Veterinary Medicine. Our world-class research, learning and teaching capabilities are enabled and enhanced by focused, well-resourced facilities and technical experts. In the REF2021 assessment, our UoA3 collective Faculty return secured 19th position overall in the UK rankings. This translates in to 21st for 4*/3* outputs but a notable 6th in terms of research power. We strive to enhance the health and wellbeing of humans, animals, and their environments by generating new knowledge and applying it to the responsible design, development, and delivery of innovation and impact.

Enquiries and Applications

Informal enquiries regarding the post should be directed to the Executive Dean of FHMS, Professor Paul Townsend by email (via [email protected] ). When completing the online application form, please ensure that you include (i) a cover letter, (ii) your CV; (iii) a brief supporting statement outlining your previous leadership accomplishments and detailing your intended five-year research programme.

N.B. Towards the end of the five-year period a decision will be taken by the Executive Dean to determine whether to extend the tenure for a further period or for the appointed candidate to return full-time to a typical academic portfolio.
