The post-holder will be the LSHTM on-site microbiology lead for Hararghe Health Research Partnership (HHR), a collaboration between LSHTM and Haramaya University, Ethiopia, and will be based in Harar, Ethiopia. A programme of research has been developed within HHR, with an international standard laboratory set-up on-site. The post-holder will contribute to the development and expansion of the research programme in microbiology/infectious diseases, oversee the laboratory, provide scientific leadership in microbiology, and collaborate with partners.

For non-clinical applicants, the postholder will have a PhD in a relevant topic.  For clinical applicants, the post-holder will have a postgraduate qualification (e.g. MRCP, MCRPath) and evidence of research experience. For both clinical and non-clinical applicants, the postholder will have expertise in medical microbiology, biomedical sciences, childhood invasive bacterial infections, antimicrobial resistance, hospital acquired infections or cause of death studies. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 30 June 2025. The post is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is available from 01 January 2024. 

For Assistant Professor the salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 7 in the range £51,299-£58,723 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). For Clinical Assistant Professor the salary will be on the clinical academic salary scale below consultant level in the range £38,619-£65,955 plus £2,162 of London allowance per annum. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in Harar, Ethiopia.
