The Institute of Medical and Biomedical Allied Education and the Centre for Allied Health (IMBAE) is the largest of the four St George’s institutes and home to nearly 150 academic and professional services staff. Our mission is high-quality medical, healthcare and science education that immerses students in research and practice and prepares them well for their future lives. We have established relationships with educational leads at all our partner hospitals, and work with a wide range of partners in the community, including hospices, nurseries, refugee support services, voluntary organisations and other organisations delivering teaching to our medical students.

The MBBS Quality and Partnerships Unit at St Georges is setting up a new Placements Allocations Team to strategically manage our clinical placement programme for medical students. The team’s objective is to streamline and strengthen the placement allocation process through enhanced coordination with partners and enhanced flexibility for student preferences. We aim to strengthen our existing partnerships, working within the sustainable, mutually beneficial framework to provide exceptional learning opportunities for students while meeting the operational needs of providers.

The new Clinical Placements Allocations Team will play a vital role in overseeing placement logistics and allocations, nurturing provider relationships, gathering feedback, and identifying continuous improvement opportunities. It will comprise five roles with dedicated tasks at varying levels of responsibility:

  • Clinical Placements Manager (grade 6)
  • Clinical Placement Coordinators x 2 (grade 5) (one for early clinical years and one for the final two years of the programme)
  • Clinical Placement Administrator x 1 (grade 4) (one already in post)

This advert relates to the appointment of the Clinical Placements Manager who will lead the new team coordinating MBBS clinical placements across our healthcare partner network. The postholder will oversee the implementation InPlace, our new placements management software, to enable smooth coordination between the university, students, and placement providers. Leveraging stakeholder relationships, the postholder will align the placement allocation process to the programme requirements while meeting partner sites capacity. The role will have oversight of the placements cycle, including communications and continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen the clinical education opportunities for students.

To ensure that all developments are recorded accurately and that efficient systems are in place for effective and appropriate transition of operations into the new software system, the post holder will be working with relevant staff members and external partners to develop manuals and standard operating procedures, including functional timelines and clear communication channels with relevant parties.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in managing complex projects, processes and teams to drive positive outcomes, such as implementing new systems and developing transition plans across a range of users. This requires critical thinking, project management and strong, collaborative leadership skills to support and develop a new high-performing team. Clear communication style and an analytical, solutions-oriented mindset are essential. Experience with clinical education programmes and managing healthcare partnerships is preferred.
