Offer Description
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.
For the new “Climate Change, Extremes and Natural Hazards in Alpine Regions Research Centre CERC”, which is established as part of the SLF in Davos, we are offering a new tenure track position for a
Scientist Initiation of Mass Movements 80-100% (f/m/d)
For this position, you will assess the driving factors behind deep-seated rock slope instability initiation in high mountain regions, the kinematics of slope displacements, their failure mechanisms, and their probability of release. You will investigate the complex effects of currently changing hydrogeological and thermomechanical rock mass characteristics on slope stability using in-situ measurements, remote sensing data and thermomechanical modelling. Your work will include the analysis of rock slope instability predisposition, the investigation of current state characteristics and the development and simulation of future scenarios, thus contributing to hazard mitigation in mountain regions in the context of rapid climate change.
You have completed academic studies in the field of geosciences, with a PhD in structural-/engineering geology or a similar discipline. You have proven expertise in the assessment of the structure and thermomechanical characteristics of frozen and unfrozen rock masses and have an excellent background in numerical modelling. You bring strong analytical and numerical skills and have a solid background in statistics. You have a talent for the organization of complex measurement campaigns in exposed mountain terrain and for interdisciplinary research and communication. Processes occurring in high mountain environments are of great interest to you. You are fluent in a Swiss national language and in English and enjoy working in a team that operates at the interface between science and practice.
Please send your complete application to Jasmine Zollinger, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Dr Yves Bühler, email:[email protected] (Alpine remote sensing group leader) and Dr Marcia Phillips, email:[email protected] (Permafrost group leader) will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
