Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern .
Job Description
Introduction
Have you always wanted to be challenged with electronics in harsh environment like the one in the CERN accelerators? Do you want to be involved in radiation test campaigns aimed at qualifying electronics components to be used CERN-wide? Would you like to apply your technical knowledge to be involved in the conception, design and development of radiation tolerant systems and testbenches? If you relish a challenge, join CERN`s Electronics Production and Radiation Tolerance section and realize your potential. Take part!
You will join the Beams Department (BE), the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics Group (CEM), and in particular the Electronics Production and Radiation Tolerance section (EPR), responsible for the qualification under radiation of electronics components for the CERN equipment.
Functions
As a Radiation Effects Engineer in the CEM Group, you will be responsible for the qualification process of the electronics components that will be used for radiation tolerant electronics in the CERN accelerators. You will drive the radiation effects engineering aspect of the testing.
More in particular, you will:
- Organize and participate in radiation test campaigns both at CERN and at external facilities; you will serve as a link person between CERN and external facilities to negotiate beam time and eventual local resources.
- Define and update the guidelines to test electronic components and systems against radiation damage (dose, displacement damage and single event effects).
- Take responsibility for specific radiation test campaigns. You will define the test conditions, design the evaluation boards and the acquisition system for the test, perform the test on site and provide a radiation test report.
- Research new technologies to understand unique failure mechanisms under radiation.
- Coordinate and supervise technical staff as required and students at any level (undergraduate, doctoral and Post-Doc).
- Follow-up the electronic components procurement and ensure the radiation quality assurance.
- Keep regular contact with all involved equipment teams and organize regular coordination meetings with all the stakeholders in the Accelerator and Technology sector.
- Develop and implement reliability guidelines, predictions and tests on new hardware programs, as well as support failure analysis and advise on the best path forward.
