Agroscope is looking for a:

Postdoctoral position on aerial insect diversity

This position is part of a European Biodiversa+ project on radar-based approaches for monitoring aerial biodiversity. Drivers of aerial insect biomass will be identified across large scales, including its relationship to landscape features. For more information see https://globam.science .

About us

The 'Agricultural Landscape and Biodiversity' Research Group examines ways of reconciling the protection of biodiversity with a productive agricultural sector.

Agriculture uses natural resources and claims ecosystem services, which affects the environment. The 'Agroecology and Environment' Research Division records and models these influences and describes the need for mitigating action. Life cycle analyses and sustainability evaluations enable the assessment of options for the future orientation of the agricultural sector.

Agroscope is the Swiss federal centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Its researchers work at a number of sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (as of 2026: Posieux), Agroscope is attached to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.

Description

-Conduct experiment on land use and insect biomass using vertical looking radars

-Analyse large datasets including data from remote sensing and monitoring programs

-Contribute to the improvement of algorithms to identify insects based on radar signals

-Write scientific publications in collaboration with project partners

-Supervise students

Requirements

-PhD in Ecology or a related field

-Experienced in analysing big data (incl. data from radars and remote sensing) using R and GIS

-Interest in collaborating in an international team, supervising students and writing publications

-Driving licence and intersted in doing fieldwork

-Knowledge of two official Swiss languages and a very good command of written and spoken English
