100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Experimental Quantum Engineering (EQE) group at ETH Zurich and PSI seeks highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to work at the intersection of quantum optics and quantum information science. Led by Prof. Wenchao Xu , the EQE group focuses on harnessing the potential of quantum systems involving neutral atoms and their Rydberg states for advancing quantum science and exploring new phenomena in quantum nonlinear optics.
Project background
Realizing the promise of quantum technologies hinges on our ability to efficiently connect and transfer information across different quantum systems. Such a quantum interconnect, which can link remote quantum systems, represents an essential component of quantum communication networks, distributed quantum sensors, and large-scale modular quantum computing architectures. While photons are ideal carriers to transmit quantum information, the implementation of optical quantum interconnects remains an outstanding challenge, due to the difficulty in coupling matter-qubits and light.
In this research project, we aim to develop, construct, and demonstrate a novel quantum interconnect that can link remote neutral-atom arrays, which have emerged as the most rapidly developing quantum information platform. Error-corrected quantum processing has recently been demonstrated in Rydberg-atom arrays, such that the technology to connect different processing units will be an important next step towards large-scale, fault-tolerant modular quantum computation. This project will pursue a novel approach, which combines individual qubits with mesoscopic atomic ensembles and exploits the unique properties of Rydberg states, to facilitate remote quantum gate operations as well as high fidelity optical interfacing without the need for optical cavities.
Job description
As a postdoc in this role, you will be at the forefront of quantum science and quantum technologies. Your responsibilities will include setting up laser systems for coherent Rydberg state manipulation, designing optical and electronic systems for precise control, and calibrating the dynamical process with the appearence of Rydberg interactions. Scientific objectives include searching for optimal Rybderg pair interactions for facilitating exchange dynamics, identifying experimental parameters for establishing realiable quantum interfaces, and demonstrating quantum optical links between remote atom-array-based processors.
This position is full-time, with flexible starting dates in 2024.
Your profile
- A PhD degree in physics or relevant fields
- Prior experience in experimental atomic, molecular and optics (AMO) physics
- Strong interest in pioneering quantum science with experimental platforms based on neutral atoms and their Rydberg states
- Good communication skills in English (German is a plus)
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration, establishing positive interactions with group members and other researchers
