The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.


The research group Dynamic Macroecology studies questions related to spatial ecology, macroevolution and biodiversity conservation. Within its Biodiversa+ project “Harmonizing and integrating Radar-based approaches for monitoring Aerial biodiversity - HiRAD” the group is looking from spring 2024 for the duration of 2 years (with option for 1 year extension) for a

PostDoc in Radar Aeroecology 80-100% (f/m/d)


HiRAD is a Biodiversa+ project with partners at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), the Institute for Nature and Forest (Belgium), Agroscope (Switzerland), the Finnish Meteorological Institute (Finland) that will develop standardized monitoring of aerial biodiversity, following earlier work within project GloBAM . The PostDoc will characterise and quantify bird movements across Europe and their relations with insect abundances and movements based on data from networks of small-scale and weather radars. An explicit aim is to link data from both radar systems and to provide tools for stakeholders.
You should have a PhD degree in environmental or data sciences and a background in migration ecology and/or biodiversity. Strong quantitative and programming skills (e.g., in R) are required and previous experience with radar aeroecology is an asset. We also expect good communication skills in English, the ability to work independently as well as in a team. HiRAD explicitly encourages close collaboration with other partners and subprojects and supports regular exchange and research visits.You will be based at WSL in Birmensdorf and will work in collaboration withthe groups named above.
