Staff scientist in precision dentistry

Updated: 3 days ago

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Odontology harbors around 70 co-workers and educate dentists and conducts odontological research. You can read more of the Department of Odontology:https://www.umu.se/institutionen-for-odontologi/

We are recruiting a staff scientist in infection biology and precision dentistry.

About the research project

Our research is translational, combining basic and clinical sciences, in infection biology for personalized    oral care, so-called precision dentistry. We are mapping the human genes, protein and molecular pathways that accounts for host-microbe crosstalk that causes endogenous susceptibility to caries as well as oral health. We are also mapping the underlaying bacteria and biofilm communities. Based on the knowledge, we develop improved diagnostics for risk and causal subtypes of caries and new methods for prevention and treatment of the disease and infections. The project accordingly contains molecular biology, translational and clinical parts in an interdisciplinary environment. More information about the research group

Work tasks

We are looking for a Staff scientist with documented competence and experience of work in the following three areas:

I. Molecular biology and biochemical work with methods and analyses of receptor-adhesin interaction and anti-microbial or prebiotic substances. The work includes mapping of saliva receptors for bacteria with different methods, such as western blot or other binding and inhibition assays using bacteria or pure adhesins as well as analyses of saliva peptides and glycopeptides for anti-microbial or prebiotic properties with different methods.

II. Work with human and microbial DNA and RNA in terms of DNA/RNA-preparations and analyses with qPCR, probe-based arrays, and sequencing at targeted, whole genome and metagenomic level. The work is done in house and ex house on life science platforms.

III. Work with clinical sample collections of saliva, bacteria, plaque(biofilm), epithelia as regards sample handling and large-scale analyses in house and on life science platforms.

Qualifications

We are looking for you with a PhD in microbiology and further experience and knowledge along the actual areas of work. The applicant needs to have a documented experience and good references for work in the given areas, including handling of large-scale clinical samples and biobank archives.

The applicant should be able to work independently and in teams and in a project-driven manner. The work is interdisciplinary and ability to cope with different concepts and methods is critical. A high emphasis will be placed on personal suitability and qualities. Proficiency in written and spoken English language is needed.

Condition

The employment is 100% and permanent with start a start as soon as possible.
