The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies. Learn more at www.ieg.uu.se .

We are now looking for a researcher to the Animal Ecology program.

Project description
Structural genomic variants (SVs) are an important but poorly explored reservoir of genetic variation that can exert both positive and negative fitness effects. Despite their significant potential to contribute to both adaptation and genomic load, little is known about their response to population genetic processes in comparison to single nucleotide variants (SNPs) and until recently have received relatively little attention in population studies. With the advent of new sequencing techniques (especially so-called long reads) and the development of bioinformatics analyses, it is now possible to characterize the population genomic character of SV. We will characterize and contrast the genomic landscape to investigate whether SVs are associated with speciation and local adaptation. We will investigate whether SVs are linked to differentiation abnormalities and thus identify candidate genes in these differentiation peaks. The results will be of importance in understanding evolutionary processes such as the role of SVs in local adaptive response at different arctic and temperate alpine latitudes, how locally adapted populations can be maintained during gene flow, speciation and the relative contribution of SVs to genomic load within low conservation status populations. The results will be important for recommendations on how populations should be managed to ensure resilience in the face of anthropogenic threats.

Duties
Bioinformatic analyses of SVs from sequence data

Qualifications required
Doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in evolutionary ecology/zooecology and experience in advanced bioinformatic analyzes in Python and R.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as cooperation skills and established competences in bioinformatic analyses. Candidates must be able to express themselves well in spoken as well as written English and Swedish.

Qualifications desired
Knowledge of amphibians and birds, especially population genomic analyses.
