Researcher in evolution of mating systems in social fishes

Updated: about 2 months ago

The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies, SLU, Umeå, is looking for a researcher in the project “Evolution of mating systems in social fishes”. The focus of the project is to study why some animals are more willing to take on the costs of group-living than others? Theory tells us that there are two potentially important driving factors. First, ecological factors may force animals to live in close proximity to one another or to form groups, because certain environments limit the survival and reproduction of solitary individuals. Second, by living with relatives, animals can gain important indirect benefits; that is, by helping relatives reproduce instead of non-relatives, individuals can ensure that some of their shared genetic information gets propagated to future generations – this is known as kin selection. The researcher will combine field-studies with lab-experiments to study the relative contribution of the two dominating forces driving group-living.
About the position

Duties:

The researcher will mostly carry out research and development within the “Ecology and evolution of fishes” framework. The main focus will be to combine field-studies with lab-experiments to study the relative contribution of the two dominating forces driving group-living. We encourage research that involve other researchers at the department and external (both national and international). In addition, the researcher is expected to contribute to education by teaching courses and supervising thesis workers. Finally, the researcher is also expected to apply for both national and international research grants as well as actively communicate the science to society.

Your profile

Qualifications:

The applicant must have a PhD in biology, ecotoxicology, evolution or similar. Documented post-doc experience is equally important. The applicant should have very well developed skills in verbal and written communication in English. Prior successful collaborations with national and/or international researchers will be important for the position. We are looking for a highly motivated, independent, and team-oriented candidate with documented experience in either behavioral ecology, fish ecology, evolutionary ecology and mating systems. Experience with live-trapping and caretaking of fish, experimental design and behavioral software will count as merits. Finally, a documented history of science communication will be a merit.
