Research project assistant (amanuens) in computer engineering

Updated: about 4 hours ago
Deadline: 08 Jun 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for up to two student assistants ("amanuens") to the Department of Computer and Information Science.

The position

We are looking for 1-2 advanced-level students in computer science, computer engineering or closely related area as a research project assistant (programming, system administration) for 1-2 part-time ”amanuens” positions with 20%-50% within a larger research and development project in parallel, distributed and heterogeneous computing. The project work can, under certain circumstances, be combined with an internal master thesis project (which requires ongoing master studies at Linköping University) related to the research project’s topic area.

The project tasks include programming of advanced system software (mostly based on C/C++ and Linux) for heterogeneous distributed computer systems, assistance in running experiments, and system administration for the project’s special hardware (such as GPU servers, Raspberry-Pi, network components etc.) and local development servers. The project’s overall goal is the development of new software technology for the development, synthesis, optimization, deployment and orchestration of the next generation of adaptive software for effective and secure execution in dynamic, distributed edge-cloud-systems. The work includes participation in the regular project meetings and can also include technical meetings with our industry partners in the project.

The person we need

In order to be employed as a student assistant, you must be admitted to university studies at first level or advanced level.

We expect a completed or almost completed bachelor degree or equivalent study progress level in computer science, computer engineering or closely related discipline, with documented study results such as Ladok grades.

The work requires very good programming skills in modern C/C++ and good familiarity with Linux (system administration and programming) and git. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently, and to communicate freely in English in writing and speech. A solid background in software tools and engineering, operating systems, concurrent programming and in programming distributed, parallel and heterogeneous computer systems is also welcome.

The workplace

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.
