Description of the subject area

Research at the Division of Neuropediatrics, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, covers a wide range of topics and methods, ranging from preclinical cell and animal models, clinical patient-oriented research, care science research to registry studies. The Division has established collaborations and strong networks with various research areas at Karolinska Institutet. This provides excellent opportunities to develop innovative collaborations to develop treatments and care for children with neuropediatric disorders. The research groups hold strong positions both nationally and internationally.

Neuropediatrics is an important clinical subspeciality within pediatrics, encompassing many neurological diseases in a large group of children in need of care. In recent years, there has been great developments in, for example, precision medicine in the treatment of epilepsy, diagnostics of new immunological diseases, and development of gene therapy within musculoskeletal diseases.


Your mission

The work description includes leading clinical research in neoropediatrics across diagnoses, including novel diagnostics and treatments, with the goal to develop and strengthen these clinical research areas in Karolinska Institutet and the Karolinska University Hospital. You are expected to contribute to the development of the clinical research infrastructure on national and international levels within these areas, for example through establishing networks and making methodology available. The position is focused on research.

The work description also includes clinical duties at the Astrid Lindgren Children´s Hospital at the Karolinska University Hospital, as the position is intended to be divided 51 percent at Karolinska Institutet and 49 percent at the Astrid Lindgren Children´s Hospital at the Karolinska University Hospital.

As the position combines employment as physician at the Karolinska University Hospital the appointee of this Professor position will be able to further develop interactions between KI and neuropediatrics, at the Astrid Lindgren Children´s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital, with other subspecialties in the hospital as well as researchers in other divisions at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health. As Professor, you are expected to strengthen highly specialized pediatric care overall and boost clinical research, as well as enable research to further strengthen neuropediatric education. Precision medicine is in the phase of being implemented in clinical practice and the appointee is expected to facilitate this.

The appointee is expected to be involved in teaching tasks including medical students, and by organizing courses for residents of pediatrics, and courses for doctoral students.


Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise as well as good clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The appointee is expected to conduct pediatric neurology research on an internationally leading level as judged by the number and quality of publications in international peer-reviewed journals. The appointee must have research grants as main applicant sought in national or international competition during the past 5 years and must have served as main supervisor for doctoral students.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in neuropediatrics at Astrid Lindgren Pediatric Hospital at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in pediatrics, and in neuropediatrics, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weigh qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership, development and collaboration skills (2), and clinical skills (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment. 

The appointee is expected to develop leadership and strengthen the overall research area, ranging from experimental to clinical research. Personal qualities, including the ability to collaborate and network, are highly meritorious.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
