Offer Description
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, with a total of some 100 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The research focuses within the fields of Atomic and Molecular Physics targeted towards Attosecond Science, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, as well as Complex Systems and Biophysics, and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, Physics teacher-training programs, and outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. Gothenburg Physics Centre is a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, and creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the department.

Information about the research group:
Prof. Raimund Feifel’s research group concentrates on electron and ion spectroscopy of atoms and molecules in different states of charge and excitation, and has considerable, internationally well-recognized, experience in developing and using high-resolution electron and ion correlation spectrometers, in combination with pulsed discharge lamps, synchrotron radiation and Free Electron Laser sources in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) and X-ray spectral region. This group develops now the activities towards the investigation of negatively charged atomic and molecular species, so-called anions, both in the static and in the ultrafast, time-resolved domain. The latter implies the daily operation and further development of attosecond interferometry beam lines based on higher order harmonic generation (HHG) of suitably high flux. The research group of Prof. Raimund Feifel collaborates within the framework of several national and international networks, comprising among others Nobel laureate Prof. Anne L’Huillier, which give the holder of the position excellent possibilities for international contacts and periods of research carried out also at other locations.
Job assignments
The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is looking for a principal research engineer in the field of experimental studies of electron emission processes of atoms and molecules. A suitable background is a PhD and a postdoc in atomic and molecular physics, in laser physics and spectroscopy. The research to be conducted within this position will focus on experimental investigations of fundamental properties of atoms and molecules emitting electrons upon photon absorption, and implies the daily operation and further development of radiation sources combined with interferometry for attosecond time-resolved, experiments, as well as applying multi-particle correlation spectroscopy methods for the detection of all charged particles created in these electron emission processes. The scientific questions addressed by this research program are primarily of fundamental nature. Daily activities, however, will imply work in applied areas involving VUV and X-radiation sources, optics, electronics, programming, hardware control, and data acquisition. A research position in this area therefore provides a solid foundation for a career both in academia and industry, and can comprise teaching if desired.
Eligibility
To qualify as a research engineer/staff scientist, the applicant must have completed a Swedish doctoral degree or must have a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has a strong background in laser physics and spectroscopy, preferably with practical experience working with ultrafast laser systems utilizing Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplificiation (OPCPA) technology, high harmonic generation and attosecond interferometry.
Employment
Type of employment: none time limited. Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Physics, Gothenburg
First day of employment: First or second quarter of 2024.
