At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. As a member of our team, your task will be to investigate the role of proteins, peptides (neuropeptides) and other small molecules in pain signaling using mass spectrometry. The aim is to understand the regulation of pain transmission, and intracellular signaling, that are activated or deactivated in relation to persistent pain. Work will be conducted in Dr. Camilla Svensson’s research group that has a focus on finding treatment strategies for inflammatory mediated chronic pain states. The applicant will spend part time at Karolinska Institute and part time at Uppsala University at the mass spectrometry unit located at Dept. of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology (Akademiska Sjukhuset, Uppsala). The ultimate goal is to identify new drug targets and develop novel drug mediators for treatment of chronic pain states. To achieve this goal we also perform additional behavioral pharmacology, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry applied to both in vivo and in vitro systems. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team investigating pain mechanisms in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The focus will be on analyzing peptides and proteins using mass spectrometry. We are working together with preclinical and clinical researchers with a mission to increase our ability to study pain from a translational aspect, from bench to bedside.
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.
We seek a highly motivated candidate, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate must have acquired expertise in the field of mass spectrometry, protein and peptide chemistry. To qualify, the candidate must possess experience within analytical techniques for separation, identification and quantification of proteins, peptides and other small molecules using nUHPLC and targeted mass spectrometry utilizing high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-SIM/PRM). A strong background bioinformatics or molecular biotechnology, corresponding to an MSc engineering degree in bioinformatics, molecular biotechnology or similar is also meriting. Good experience in sample preparation for mass spectrometry and hands on experience using high-resolution Thermo Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS is considered a merit.
We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team player to our group. You will be part of a team of various experts, so we are looking for individuals who excel at working independently and, at the same time have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multi-disciplinary team. Apart from mass spectrometry analyses, the candidate is expected to take part of other aspects of experimentation including in vivo and in vitro work as well as presentation and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise is highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.
Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.
The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
An application must contain the following documents in English:
The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
