Updated: 4 months ago

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Duties

Mikael Björnstedt’s research group is searching a postdoctoral researcher to study the antitumor effects of selenium compounds as cancer therapeutics, we perform translational and clinical studies focusing on redox-active selenium compounds as chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer. The research has a wide span including both clinical trials and mechanistic studies with focus on drug action.

Primary duties included in the role are:

  • Managing your own research projects
  • Teaching and supervision of junior staff, students
  • Ongoing contact with collaboration partners
  • Writing and publishing of scientific articles

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

We are seeking a PhD with a background in biomedical engineering, pathology, and cancer therapy. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research group closely collaborating with clinical departments and other national and international research groups. Therefore, experience in a similar field is advantageous during the selection process.

In addition to the mentioned qualifications, we encourage candidates with a keen interest in basic biostatistics and RNA sequencing to apply. A strong background in molecular biology techniques is essential, including expertise in miRNA detection by qPCR and in situ hybridization, protein detection by Western blot, as well as proficiency in molecular pathology methods (frozen and fixed samples preparation and handling from fresh patient-derived tissues, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent labeling, FISH, RNAscope).

The candidate should also demonstrate expertise in wet lab molecular biology methods such as in vitro culturing and ex vivo patient-derived organotypic culturing. Experience with selenium compounds, previous research on cell death, investigation of the effect of chemotherapy agents on different molecular pathways, and familiarity with gastrointestinal tumors such as pancreatic, liver, biliary, and colon tumors are necessary qualifications for the applicant.

As an individual, we are looking for someone who is creative and motivated with strong collaboration skills. We consider personal qualities important, and excellent proficiency in both written and verbal English is a prerequisite for the role.
