The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. Feel free to read more about the department's activities here: www.igp.uu.se
Duties
The work will be conducted within the "Healthy Aging" project. The project intends to identify mechanisms that lead to inhibition of blood vessel function with increasing age. The impaired function leads to poorer circulation, which soon affects all the body's organs, with failing organ function and finally, death, as a result. The project goal is to find out whether the growth factor VEGF can prevent failing circulation and promote healthy ageing.
The project is based on experiments using mice as a model organism. Several mouse strains will be established and investigated with respect to how VEGF can improve circulation and organ function.
The project includes the following:
- Genotyping mouse strains, planning breeding and treatments. Identify and dissect organs.
- Monitoring of the effect of VEGF using various immune analyses (Elisa, immunoblot, tissue sectioning/staining, flow analysis) and with regard to vessel permeability.
- Monitoring of the effect of VEGF through various physical tests, e.g. on muscle strength and coordination.
- Certain analyses are performed using confocal microscopy, followed by image analysis,
- Compilation of results, troubleshooting, statistical calculations, and presentation of results are essential in the project.
Qualifications
PhD degree in Life Science subject or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Life Science subject. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
There should be documented experience and skill in:
- Work with mouse models and keeping a mouse strain in the correct breeding.
- Various in vivo techniques such as pellet implantation, tumor cell injection, isolation of live cells such as immune cells and endothelial cells, from tissues.
- Cell isolation via microdissection and flow sorting, tissue sectioning, immunostaining, confocal microscopy (Zeiss and Leica equipment).
- Various immune-based analysis methods.
- Statistical analyses.
- Compilation and presentation of results.
Additional qualifications
Broad experience in cellular and molecular biology techniques.
Excellent organizational skills.
Excellent social skills and ability to collaborate, ask questions and also guide students.
