Postdoctoral position in Ultrafast laser imaging techniques for analysing cooling processes with sprays (PA2024/904)
Description of the workplace
The Division of Combustion Physics is well-established and internationally recognized for excellence in the measurement and development of combustion applications related to ground and aerospace combustion engines and energy production. The Department of Physics conducts a wide array of research, together with other departments within the Faculty of Engineering. Our modern research facility Enoch Thulin laboratory was built in 2001 and currently supports the work of around 60 researchers. Combustion Physics web page
Subject description
The proposed research work consists in developing and applying some advanced laser imaging techniques for determining the temperature on hot surfaces that are cooled with spray systems. The main goal of this project is to deduce accurately the efficiency of various spray systems for cooling electric motors. Such measurements will be performed by means of novel ultrafast imaging approaches.
Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.
An important issue related to the use of electric motors is the excess of heat that is generated during power-demanding operations. To solve this issue, the use of spray cooling is very promising. This new approach needs to be analyzed.
The work duty of this research project is to analyze in detail the cooling of electric motors using sprays. Accurate temperature measurements of fast cooling systems will be obtained by combining several advanced laser imaging techniques. This includes: 1) Two-color LIF thermometry. 2) Life-time LIP thermometry. 3) Two-photon excitation. 4) Structured illumination. 5) Ultra-high-speed image recording.
Detailed description of the work duties, such as:
- Research within the subject area
- Guidance and co-supervision of doctoral students
- Administration related to the work duties listed above
- Following the planning of the E-COOL project funded by EIC
Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Additional requirements:
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- A PhD within the subject of the position.
Extensive knowledge on ultrafast image recording. Extensive knowledge on two-photon excitation using femtosecond lasers. Knowledge in temperature measurements using laser based diagnostics. Ability to independently design and carry out experimental research projects related to two-phase flow systems.
- A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.
For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
- A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
- Teaching skills.
Other qualifications:
Experience in temperature measurements involving temperature sensitive dyes. Experience in diagnostic techniques based on Structured Illumination. Experience in laboratory work related to two-phase flows. Strong skills in programming and image analysis. Journal publications in the field.
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
We offer
Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme.
