Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.
The Department of Molecular Biology seeks a postdoctoral researcher who will work with the Cava group investigating bacterial cell wall dynamics and identifying novel cell wall regulatory partnersa temporary. The employment is full-time for two years with start in May 2024 or upon agreement.
Project description and working tasks
The Cava lab at the Laboratory of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Department of Molecular Biology (Umeå University) conducts research on cell wall biology and genetics in bacteria. Given that the enzymes responsible for producing and maintaining the cell wall are prime targets for many effective antibiotics, understanding the principles of bacterial cell wall homeostasis and adaptability is crucial in tackling emerging resistant infections. Therefore, our primary objective is to enhance our understanding of the various components involved in cell wall biogenesis, remodeling, and regulation, as well as to explore their functions and interactions. Additionally, we aim to transition towards quantitative studies and computational modeling. These investigations hold great potential in identifying novel targets for the development of antimicrobial agents.
Your role will involve characterizing the genetic factors that regulate bacterial cell wall homeostasis across different model bacteria and uncovering the environmental cues that influence regulatory networks governing peptidoglycan plasticity.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess a university degree in Molecular Biology or Microbiology equivalent to a European University PhD at the time of recruitment. We seek individuals who are highly motivated, possess excellent communication skills for interaction with senior colleagues and peers, and demonstrate strong teamwork abilities.
Additionally, the recruited postdoctoral fellow should have prior experience in analytical chemistry, particularly in cell wall analysis. Proficiency in chromatography, mass spectrometry, and associated software such as Empower, UNIFI, and Masslynx is essential. Experience in optimizing and developing new analytical methods, sample preparation and analysis, as well as routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments, is highly desirable.
The applicant will focus on investigating bacterial cell wall dynamics and identifying novel cell wall regulatory partners. Proficiency in standard molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, including DNA cloning, protein production, and purification, is required. A solid understanding of microbiology and basic microscopy methods is also necessary. Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, particularly Tn-seq for high-throughput screening of mutant libraries, is a definite advantage.
