Postdoctoral Fellow in Water-related extremes

Updated: 3 months ago
Deadline: 02 Nov 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-0229-24

at the Department of Physical Geography . Closing date: 11 February 2024.

The Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 110 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Education is oriented towards geography, geosciences, biology-earth sciences, and environmental protection and environmental management. We offer a stimulating and friendly environment in a very diverse and international department.

Project description
Water-related extreme events, hazards and risks threaten regions around the world. To effectively mitigate the threats, it's crucial to understand and manage the occurrence and relationships of various such events, like floods, drought, and landslides. This project aims to develop a framework for quantification and mapping of multiple water-related hazards and risks, considering effects of geographic variability and temporal change in hydro-climate and land-use, using advanced techniques like deep learning, metaheuristic optimization algorithms, and big data analysis.

Main responsibilities
The position includes research for:

  • Developing a quantification and mapping approach for multiple water-related extremes, applicable to various regions around the world, and considering the effects of hydro-climate and land-use variability and change
  • Utilizing deep learning methods for modeling, feature selection, and weighting of contributing factors, including hydro-climate and land-use
  • Model optimization considering uncertainties in projections of hydro-climate and land-use change
  • Big data analysis, including various global climate outputs and land-use datasets
  • Identifying high-risk areas and cities in support of relevant prioritization and targeting of risk mitigation efforts for floods, drought, and landslides under different socioeconomic and hydro-climate change scenarios.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A strong background in computational hydrological and/or hydro-climate research with a focus on extreme events
  • Programming, hydrological modeling, remote sensing, machine learning and spatial data analysis skills
  • A publication track record that shows ability to conduct and publish research in the field of hydrology, remote sensing, extreme events, and/or hydro-climatic change;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to represent the research group internally and externally for instance at national and international conferences and workshops.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2024-03-01 or as per agreement.
