Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical neuroscience, Health and rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology as well as Psychiatry and neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience for work on a register-based project. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and will the coming years study long-term treatment outcomes in epilepsy.

The research group belongs to the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology and is a part of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine, (www.wcmtm.gu.se ), which means many excellent opportunities for career development. The research group is run by Johan Zelano and consists of PhD-students, postdoctors, students and a clinical study coordinator. We do epidemiological research based on national registers. In addition, we do several clinical biobank studies. The group has multiple national and international collaborations.

Subject area

Epilepsy

Subject area description

Epilepsy can be genetic or arise after brain insults or disease. The aim of the research is to improve health care of persons with acquired epilepsy, find biomarkers for treatment and study of epilepsy, and optimize treatment. Epilepsy is often treated with drugs, but finding the right treatment can be difficult. We use big data from national registers to study which epilepsy treatments work best based on individual characteristics like age, sex, and comorbidities. We also run clinical studies in which we search for biomarkers (blood samples, neurophysiology, or radiology) of value for identification of difficult-to-treat epilepsy or side effects.

Job assignments

We work in several projects with data from national registers and study risk factors for, prognosis in and treatment of various epilepsies. A major focus is currently pharmacoepidemiology, using drug register data to follow epilepsy treatment in different patient groups. Furthermore, we carry out biomarker studies where we collect biological material or examination results in clinical practice and try to correlate these to clinical course - for example epileptic seizures or drug side effects.

We are now looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work with our project on large data sets in which we want to build a large database for pharmacoepidemiological studies. The work requires familiarity with statistical methods and programming languages used to handle large data sets, for example R or Python. Within the framework of the group's research, there is an opportunity to also develop own lines of research in epilepsy. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to contribute to the academic environment in the group and there are great opportunities to supervise doctoral students and students.
