Offer Description

Description of the workplace
The Transfusion medicine research team at the Department of Laboratory Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine, currently conducts research about the biology of the polymorphic molecules on the red blood cell surface, also known as blood groups, and is at the forefront of its field. At present, the research team is working on a project about developing ABO-universal blood for transfusion, which is an international collaboration between Lund University and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). You can read more about our projects on our website . The research team is led by Professor Martin L Olsson and includes approximately 10-15 other members over time. The group is international and comprises research, administrative and technical staff. We are now looking for a driven and experienced researcher in experimental transfusion medicine to support the project. As a workplace, we safeguard a positive work environment with respect and consideration in our relations with one another. The Principal Investigator holds regular meetings with the whole team.

What we offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. We also have a flexitime agreement that provides good conditions for work/life balance.

Work duties
The research assignment consists of you independently conducting a project on the red blood cell glycobiology and how to create ABO-universal blood, under the leadership of the Principal Investigator. The work mainly constitutes experimental in vitro work in the laboratory with substances of human or recombinant origin. The work duties also comprise literature review and summarizing your work in written form, including publishing articles in research journals, contribute to conferences and assist in the other work duties that the above-mentioned research project and the laboratory as a whole entails.

To qualify for the position, the applicant must have a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within a subject relevant for the position (i.e. life sciences, preferably with a focus on the topic of the project), completed no more than three years before the date of employment decision. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Requirements for employment are:

  • Doctoral degree in the life sciences, specializing in glycobiology and/or erythrocyte biology and/or transfusion medicine
  • Documented experience of and deep knowledge about research about blood groups, particularly those of carbohydrate nature
  • Documented skills and knowledge in techniques relevant for the project including blood group serological methods, biochemistry and genetics
  • Very good knowledge of oral and written English
  • The ability to conduct independent research at an advanced level
  • Good analytical ability, drive and a good ability to collaborate

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Experience of methods particularly important for a project on ABO-universal blood, e.g. flow cytometry, molecular biology, protein chemistry like Western blot, ELISA etc.
  • Good knowledge about blood group analysis and interpretation, e.g. hemagglutination in gel cards and similar methods, e.g. obtained in clinical laboratory practice
  • Previous experience of research in similar projects

Research expertise is the foremost criterion for employment. The evaluation of applicants will take account of their previous publications, research profile, experience and knowledge.

Further information
The employment is a full time position limited to 2 years. The employment is time-limited according to the agreement, "Agreement on limited-time employment as postdoctoral researcher-2022-02-01". Start date is 2024-05-01 or according to agreement.
