Subject description
The NMX Macromolecular Diffractometer is one of the neutron instruments at the European Spallation Source (ESS) currently under construction and scheduled to receive first neutrons in mid 2024. Lund University is participating in commissioning of NMX as a Swedish in-kind contribution to ESS operations. The NMX Commissioning Scientist at the Department of Chemistry will spend 80% at the ESS.

Work duties
The NMX Commissioning Scientist will:

  • Participate in testing NMX functionality with and without neutrons
  • Prepare test samples for scientific commissioning
  • Participate in the NMX instrument documentation
  • Participate in method development for neutron macromolecular crystallography
  • Support user experiments at NMX
  • Perform research in neutron macromolecular crystallography

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. chemistry, biology, physics)
  • Experience in macromolecular crystallography
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience in neutron macromolecular crystallography
  • Experience in crystallisation method development

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
