Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Doctoral position in Medical Science

Project title: Occupational exposure to metals and potential health effects during manufacturing and recycling of lithium-ion batteries

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine, is located at the Institute of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. Occupational and Environmental Medicine is an integrated unit with staff from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and from Sahlgrenska University Hospital. We investigate patients and workplaces regarding different occupational and environmental factors. The research group Environmental Health and Toxicology consists of about 20 researchers from PhD-student to professors with different professional competences, including medical doctors, statisticians, occupational hygienists, chemists, and physicists. Our research covers a wide range of areas within environmental health, for example metals and other chemical exposures, air pollution, noise, per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), biomarkers and work in heat.

General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's doctoral student pages https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/doktorand/?languageId=100001&skipSSOCheck=true

Duties

The PhD education in Medical Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see https://www.gu.se/en/sahlgrenska-akademin/doctoral-studies

Project: Electrification of the vehicle fleet is a key factor to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and achieve climate goals. This has led to several facilities for production and recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LiB) being established across Sweden, Europe, and the world. LiB manufacturing involves the use of several metals known to cause adverse health effects. Manufacturing and recycling of LiB involves new techniques and materials but studies on occupational exposures in these workplaces and potential health effects are lacking. This PhD project aims at increasing the knowledge on metal exposure in these new occupational settings and to investigate potential health effects among workers. This project aims also at proposing appropriate occupational health surveillance and guideline values for biomonitoring. Altogether, this project will contribute with knowledge that will ensure and promote a sustainable working environment for workers involved in the production and recycling of LiB.

The PhD-project consists of four epidemiological studies that include a characterization of the metal exposure during manufacturing and recycling of LiB and investigation of potential health effects among workers. The project requires proficiency in medicine, epidemiology, chemical exposures, statistics, database management, ability to communicate in English and Swedish, both orally and in writing, and working both independently and in group. Since the Swedish language is used at most of the workplaces included in the study it is a merit if the applicant is fluent in written and spoken Swedish. A background in medicine is desirable as well as some experience in epidemiology and statistics. Documented experience in using statistical software (e.g. SAS and/or STATA) and handling large databases and regression analysis is a merit.

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.  As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.
