The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
A doctoral position is an available doctoral education project to which a PhD student is to be recruited. After the selection process the process for admission to doctoral education will commence. An admission decision will not be taken until an individual study plan has been approved by the departmental admission board.

The Unit of Epidemiology conducts research to improve the understanding of how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the risk and prognosis of diseases, particularly cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Strong emphasis is put on the development of epidemiological theory and methods. Our research group currently runs a project about the ageing population. The overall aims of this project are to investigate causes for the pronounced reduction in old age mortality during the previous decades and centuries and to project future developments in health and disease burden in an ageing population. We are a multidisciplinary team primarily working with data from Swedish population registers and combine methods and knowledge from epidemiology, demography, and sociology. We are now looking for a doctoral student for the upcoming 4 years with start in September 2017.
The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
This doctoral education project aims at describing and understanding trends in mortality, morbidity, and life expectancy among the old in Sweden. It will also include modelling future projections of incidence and prevalence of common diseases among the old, particularly cardiovascular diseases. The project is based on large-scale data from Swedish population registers. The doctoral student will use demographic and epidemiologic methods and work independently with the design of quantitative studies and advanced statistical analyses. Supervision will be provided by both epidemiologists and demographers.

To be eligible, the applicant must hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Epidemiology or Public Health with a strong focus on epidemiologic methods. The candidate should possess excellent communication and writing skills in English. The position requires strong analytical skills and a very good command of statistical software (Stata and SAS).
Skills and personal qualities
We are looking for a motivated applicant with a strong background in epidemiology and the ability to work productively in a multidisciplinary research team. A candidate holding a degree in demography, epidemiology or quantitative sociology will be prioritized. Experience and knowledge in more than one of these disciplines is a strong merit. Participation in the European Doctoral School of Demography or comparable programs is a merit. A good understanding of Swedish is desirable since the position requires independent work with Swedish register data. Furthermore, the project includes cooperation with researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany, which is why a good understanding of German is a merit. The position requires strong analytical skills and a very good command of statistical software (Stata and SAS). The applicant should have experience with register-based research and longitudinal data analysis. The applicant should possess good interpersonal skills as well as the capacity to work independently and critically evaluate results as well as strong writing skills.
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:

- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject

All doctoral students at KI receive financial support during their doctoral education and employment on a doctoral studentship is the most common sort of support. During the time between recruitment and admission a short-term employment can be offered for up to 6 months.
