at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics .

SciLifeLab is a national center for molecular biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center also collaborates with several other universities.

As a national hub for molecular biosciences in Sweden, SciLifeLab  develops and maintains unique research infrastructure, services and data resources for life science. The overall aim of SciLifeLab is to facilitate cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary life science research and promote its translation to the benefit of society. About 200 research groups, 1500 researchers and 40 national infrastructure units are associated with SciLifeLab, with two main centers located in Stockholm and Uppsala, but with national SciLifeLab units at all major Swedish universities. The SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden, NBIS ) is now looking for outstanding candidates with competences in analysis of large-scale proteomics data, and related molecular and clinical data, to provide advanced bioinformatics and data science support to data-driven Swedish research projects.

The employment will be placed at the Department of biochemistry and biophysics, at Stockholm university.

Main responsibilities

Your work will include data analysis and scientific deduction at an internationally competitive level, as well as being a driver of bioinformatics postgraduate training. We are looking for a bioinformatician or data scientist with experience of large molecular research projects, with skills in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and protein bioinformatics.

The main responsibilities are to:

  • Carry out advanced bioinformatics and data science analyses in collaborative research projects
  • Potentially develop computational tools and workflows for such analyses
  • Educate other scientists in bioinformatics through collaboration within supported projects, teaching at advanced national courses, and consultations
  • Engage in the continuous development and improvement of the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics platform, SciLifeLab training, and SciLifeLab data and infrastructure services in general.

The position is part of the SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform (NBIS), with over 120 experts, providing advanced bioinformatics support, infrastructure and training to the Swedish life science research community and participating in international collaborations. NBIS Support teams comprise about 60 full-time senior bioinformaticians across Sweden working on a wide range of omics applications, bioimage analysis, structural bioinformatics, as well as data science and machine learning/AI. Examples of supported scientific areas span from precision medicine and diagnostics, to fundamental cell biology, and evolutionary/environmental research. The Support teams are also connected to the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS ), a 12-year initiative focusing on data-driven research within fields essential for improving people’s lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability.

Qualification requirements

The candidate should have:

  • A PhD or similar relevant working experience from advanced studies within bioinformatics or data science, in academia or industry
  • Proficiency in terminal-based work in a Linux environment and advanced scripting in a relevant scripting language (e.g Python, Perl or R)
  • Extensive (5+ years) experience from performing scientific analyses on large-scale molecular data sets, and ability to perform scientific deduction at an internationally competitive level
  • Skills in advanced analysis of mass spectrometry proteomics data and/or protein bioinformatics
  • Experience with biostatistics and/or machine learning approaches
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, and
  • Strong skills in cooperation and communication.
  • Additional qualifications:

Postdoctoral studies are meriting but not a requirement. Skills in advanced data integration of various omics data such as for example proteomics, metabolomics and transcriptomics is meriting, as well as strong skills in experimental design for such studies. “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us, and documented skills in development of reproducible code by using code sharing platforms, workflow languages and container solutions is a strong merit.
